How Civil Rights and Social Justice fit into Sex::Tech

Sounds like a stretch, right? Daniel Jae-Won Lee, Executive Director of the Levi Strauss Foundation doesn't think so. He recently wrote a guest post for Beth Kanter's blog called, "Putting the Social into Social Justice."

He pointed out a few potential barriers to adding social media for causes:

  • In the noisy field of social media, engaging in far-reaching two-way conversations means surrendering “message control” and the traditional calculus of “message discipline.”
  • While emotional storytelling is crucial to engaging the hearts and minds of social media consumers, advocates are ethically bound to preserve the privacy of vulnerable clients.

And I would change up his last point, from Board Members to Funders:

  • Substantiating impact and success to risk-averse board members (funders) may be vexing.

He then went on to describe a new Pioneer in Justice grantee, ACLU Northern California. Nikki Ozer, ACLU-NC's Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director, is a panelist on the Monday plenary at Sex::Tech 2012. She will be speaking with Dr. Marty Klein  and Ann Collier from Connect Safely about Youth, Tech and Sex: No Harm, No Foul.

Other social justice and advocacy groups at Sex::Tech 2012 include:

Jasmine Burnett from SisterSong

Luvvie Ajayyi from the Red Pump Project

Emily May from Hollaback!

Jamia Wilson from Spark.
